Commercial Steel Door FAQs

Cutting a commercial steel door should be done carefully and with the right tools to ensure a precise finish. First, measure and mark the cut line. Then, use a fine-toothed circular saw blade specifically designed for cutting metal, or an angle grinder with a metal-cutting disc. Make sure to clamp the door securely to prevent movement and wear protective gear, including safety glasses and gloves. After cutting, smooth the edges with a metal file or sandpaper to remove any sharp burrs. Cutting steel doors can impact fire ratings, so consult the manufacturer’s guidelines and consider professional assistance if precision is essential.

CDI Doors makes cut down and restyling easy by offering it directly at the factory. If you need to cut down a steel door, first see if you can have it done by CDI Doors before going through the hassle of doing it yourself as it can be very inconvenient and frustrating.
To install a commercial steel door, first ensure you have a compatible door frame properly anchored to the wall. Begin by placing the door in the frame to check alignment. Use shims to adjust for a snug, level fit, ensuring the door swings freely without dragging. Once aligned, secure the door hinges to the frame with screws. Next, install the door hardware, such as the handle, lockset, or closer, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure the door opens and closes smoothly, and verify that all hardware is tightened. For optimal security and performance, hiring a professional installer is recommended.
Steel commercial doors are constructed with a core material, often made of either honeycomb, polystyrene, or polyurethane, to provide insulation and stability. This core is sandwiched between two steel sheets, typically 18 or 16 gauge, which are bonded to the core material. The door’s edges are reinforced with steel channels for added strength and durability. The steel sheets are then primed or finished for corrosion resistance. Some doors also have fire-resistant materials and acoustic insulation, depending on their intended use. This construction ensures a strong, secure, and energy-efficient door suitable for commercial settings.
